My favorite computer games are the "3D shooter" games, and I love to
play them whenever I have some time to kill.
Doom 3
is currently the game to beat. It takes a HUGE step forward in realism. The simulation of real physics alone is very impressive.
It's pretty scary & very creepy, which is what we've come to expect from
id
since the original Doom. For the best experience, play Doom 3 in the dark with the speakers turned up!
Until Doom3, for single player, story and mission based games, my favorite was
Return to Castle Wolfenstein
by Gray Matter
and
id.
This game is nothing short of amazing! It's so realistic that at times, it was uncomfortable for
me to play it. Everything about this game is a big step forward from everything that came before
it. This game has it all: detailed character models & graphics, stunning artificial intelligence,
complex missions, strategy, realistic weapons, etc.
Until Castle Wolfenstein, my favorite game was
Half-Life
by Valve.
This is great 3D shooter game and it's still lots of fun. The game play is pretty realistic
and the artificial intelligence of the enemies presents a surprising challenge. This is the game
that got me into playing "deathmatch" games online.
Quake 3 Arena is a great
"deathmatch" game! This game is very fast paced. If you’re not constantly running, you’re
as good as dead. The graphics are outstanding and the characters & levels are very well
designed & implemented.
My other favorites over the years have been Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Doom II, & Quake II by
id,
and Duke Nukem 3D & Shadow Warrior by
3D Realms.
I am anxiously waiting for
Duke Nukem Forever
from 3D Realms.
Duke Nukem Forever will surely take 3D shooter games to the next level.

I still like some of the classic arcade games like Pac-Man and Donkey Kong. There's a program out there
called MAME (Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator) that can run the code taken from the old arcade
machines thus reproducing the games EXACTLY! You even have to put in virtual coins. It's very cool.
